About Establishment

CAWS 4 PAWS – Great Brak River
Dedicated to alleviating the suffering of Domestic Animals.

First established in 2007 when our local Vets at Croft Animal Hospital realised the urgent need to address the problem of stray dogs and homeless animals in our Community. A few animal lovers agreed to support this idea and give of their time and services in establishing what later became known as the Community Animal Welfare Society – CAWS 4 PAWS, which was registered as a NPO in April 2013.

Since its inception, and generously supported by the Garden Route SPCA and PDSA, we have sterilised thousands of cats and dogs, dipping, inoculating, feeding and housing – with free rubber kennels which were bought from Port Elizabeth.

“How is all this possible in a small village by the sea?” asked one visitor…the answer is “Community Spirit and Involvement”, and this comes from Great Brak and surrounding areas. “We are supported wonderfully, not only by local businesses but also from Mossel Bay and George as well. This is an exceptional example of our community making it happen.

Fundraising is and will always be the most challenging thing for any welfare society. We have held Golf Days, Variety Concerts, Beach Walks, Tins collections and so many other events. But what has really enabled us to keep going financially are a few generous benefactors.

We have been extremely fortunate to inherit from the estates of three local animal lovers, which enable us to provide services that we never dreamed possible. This is such an important issue, and we would like to encourage any person who cares and loves animals, to seriously consider including our Society and others in their wills. Fundraising has become more difficult recently with the Covid epidemic, but a capital amount can be invested and provide a healthy monthly return for welfare societies.

In times of need, such as the large fires that hit Knysna and George areas, CAWS 4 PAWS was able to financially support KAWS – Knysna Animal Welfare Society and the Garden Route SPCA, as we all work towards the same objectives. A donation of R8000 was recently made to ODIN (Oudtshoorn Dogs In Need) with the recent floods.

We are also realise the need for education and awareness of the responsibilities of keeping a domestic pet and our volunteer helpers use every opportunity to teach community members’ on how to improve their pet care. We would like to expand our services to include an education drive in local schools as well.
